The honest comparison for owner-operators who don't have a 6-month implementation budget.
ServiceTitan is the most-mentioned HVAC software in the industry. It's also built for large, multi-location operations with dedicated office staff, a fleet of 30+ technicians, and someone whose full-time job is managing the software. If that's not your business, ServiceTitan is likely overkill — and the implementation burden may do more damage than the software does good.
ServiceTitan is excellent software for the right customer. Multi-location HVAC companies with 50+ technicians, dedicated dispatch, an office manager, and an operations director benefit from its dispatch board, route optimization, and multi-location reporting.
The problem is that the sales process doesn't always make this clear. Small HVAC owners get the same pitch — and end up with enterprise software they can't fully implement, a bill that reflects the enterprise pricing tier, and an onboarding process that takes months and requires significant internal time investment.
With ServiceTitan — and most HVAC software — you buy the platform and then do the configuration. You set up the workflows, build the automations, import your customer list, train your team, and manage the ongoing maintenance. For a large company with an operations team, that's fine. For an owner who is also a technician, it's a second job.
The alternative is a done-for-you build. You provide your business details and your customer list. The system is built, tested, and deployed for you. On go-live day, you get a single walkthrough of how to respond to conversations — everything else runs in the background.
For most Richmond HVAC owners, the implementation burden of DIY software is the thing that kills the ROI. The platform itself might be excellent — but if it takes six months to configure and requires weekly maintenance, the owner's time cost exceeds the software's value.
Jobber — strong field service management, good for scheduling and invoicing. Better fit for small shops than ServiceTitan, but still self-managed. Doesn't include automated follow-up sequences or reputation management.
Housecall Pro — similar to Jobber. Clean interface, good scheduling features. Doesn't handle the full lead-to-booked flow automatically. You still need separate tools for follow-up and reviews.
Both are legitimate options if you want to manage the software yourself and you only need scheduling and invoicing. If you need automated lead follow-up, review generation, reactivation campaigns, and a CRM — you'll need to add tools on top, which brings you back to the fragmentation problem.
